‘SPEY RIVER CANOE PADDLE’

Kingussie to Loch Insh
Saturday 21 September

Supporting and fund raising for The Church of Scotland

CANOE PADDLE EVENT
SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED

We set off on the 11km stretch from Kingussie beach to Loch Insh finishing at Loch Insh Outdoor Centre. There are several small rapids and swifts all the way down and the biggest rapid on the day was about half way down where the River Tromie meets the River Spey. It’s a grade one rapid and many canoes have tipped because of the fast moving water. The journey took us around 3.5 hours in total. The wind was against us all day with a cool southerly hitting our faces. The Kingussie to Loch Insh stretch is RSPB protected and there are loads of sand martens nesting at the side of the river.

COMPLETED WALK

On Saturday 23rd August, I set off at 06.28 am by train from Kingussie to Dalwhinnie to commence the walk from the railway station to Kingussie, approximately 17 miles.  Dalwhinnie Distillery was the first landmark, sadly not open this early in the morning.   The first section of the walk was along General Wade’s Military Road along Glen Truim and the River Truim passing Garbh-Mheall Mor a well known mountain.    I caught site of three stags and red squirrels along this stretch of road.  I then continued through Crubenbeg and onto the cycle path which took me right  through to Newtonmore, arriving over the River Spey.  On the left just outside Newtonmore were some bee hives, probably the source of heather honey from the abundance of heather seen on the journey.  The first landmark in Newtonmore was the Shinty pitch where the Clan MacPherson Highland Games are held in August.   A few keen runners take part in a race up and down Creag Dubh, quite a climb.  The path then continues past the Truck stop a  popular venue for truckers and locals alike, the Clan MacPherson Museum and the Harris Tweed Shop.  In the centre of Newtonmore there is the Wild Cat Trail Centre where visitors are able to follow  a map showing many highly decorated figures of the famous Wild cats.  On leaving Newtonmore we pass the Highland Folk Museum with the Monadhliath  mountains and  Creag Bheag on the left, finally arriving home in Kingussie.  A very pleasant walk, beautiful scenery and the weather was perfect, not too hot.

Thank you to all of the local community for your fantastic support.

On Saturday 26th of July I attended a second sponsored walk with Joe in the Cairngorms National Park.

Joe had an early start leaving from the Cairngorm mountain railway at 2083 feet and descending into Glenmore and then to Aviemore by bike. He continued his cycle south to the village of Kincraig and Loch Insh Water sports where I met Joe for a much needed bacon and egg roll.

From there we continued on foot heading towards Kingussie where the Defibrillator will be installed. Following the road and paths we made good time in passing around Loch Insh and passing Farletter crag hidden in the woods. After that we walked through a few small villages until we saw Ruthven Barracks sitting outside Kingussie. Overall we had a great walk that will see another Defibrillator in the town of Kingussie.

Walk Completed.

Read more below about the journey…

On the 7th June Joe and Scott commenced a walk from St. Aidan’s Church in Aviemore to raise money for a defibrillator in Kingussie.  It was a sponsored walk with Scott acting as guide as he is local to the area and an experienced climber hill walker in the Highlands.

We followed the Speyside way from Aviemore to Dalraddy where we stopped for a break and then continued to  Kincraig for refuel overlooking Loch Insh.

It started raining heavily on the second half of the walk but that didn’t stop our progress.  We continued following winding paths through forest to the small villages of Insh, Inveruglass and Drumguish.

Near the end of our walk we passed the ruin of Ruthven Barracks, near Insh Marshes the site of the Jacobean revolution, then we passed the Kingussie Shinty Grounds and finally arrived at Our Lady of the Rosary & St. Columba Church where the Defibrillator will be installed.   We were welcomed on arrival by the parish community and members of the Kingussie community who provided a scrumptious Strawberry tea with homemade cakes, scones etc.

In total we walked 17.5 miles for Sudbury Torch and raised enough money to buy a new defibrillator for Kingussie.

It felt good to take part in something for the community and will also raise awareness for the Sudbury Torch community projects.

The new defibrillator box has been fixed to the church wall awaiting installation and commissioning of  the defibrillator.

SPONSORED WALK

The Test Way Walk is a 25.5 miles walk through Hampshire. This is being undertaken to raise money for Sudbury Torch, a local charity that is raising funds for local communities and projects, including the installation of ‘life saving defibrillators’ in key locations throughout the local area.

COMPLETED

I successfully completed the cross country Test Way Walk for Charity on my 65th birthday, this 25th September. That is more than a marathon and farther than most days !

On a lovely sunny autumn day I strode over 26 miles, from St. Mary Bourne to Romsey, up over hills and through woods. Across bridal ways, through stiles and up quite steep elevations at points. It was tough at times.

The organisers had all in hand. We checked in with them at specific points and were well supported both during and after the walk. A long day’s walk but success in the end.

All monies raised in aid of Sudbury Torch are being used to fund defibrillators in the locality of Sudbury. Others will go to Sudbury Chemist on Harrow Road, and on the High Street in Harrow on the Hill.
